El Centro de Prevención del Suicidio del Estado de Nueva York ofrece información sobre capacitación   disponible para la comunidad, incluida capacitación en persona, capacitación en línea y recursos de capacitación específicos de la escuela.

 

Existen varios programas basados en la evidencia para educar a la comunidad sobre el suicidio, enseñar a las personas a hablar con alguien en riesgo y acceder a asistencia útil. Cada uno de los programas descritos a continuación es apropiado para todos los adultos de la comunidad; no se requiere experiencia previa ni educación específica. Algunos programas pueden estar disponibles para estudiantes de secundaria.

ASIST

​​

A two-day interactive workshop designed for all community members to recognize when an individual is at risk of suicide and to intervene safely and effectively. ASIST has been used around the world and is listed on the Best Practice Registry of the federal Suicide Prevention Center. ASIST helps prepare volunteers, informal helpers and professionals from all disciplines to:

  • Recognize when individuals may be at risk of suicide

  • Understand how your beliefs affect your responses with individuals at risk

  • Engage an individual at risk about his/her reasons for considering suicide and the reasons for living

  • Develop a plan to increase safety from suicidal behavior

  • Follow-up on all safety commitments, accessing further help as needed.

LivingWorks Start

​​​

LivingWorks Start is a training program for anyone over the age of 13 aimed to provide evidence-based skills and teach others how to play a role in suicide prevention. No prior experience is required for this training.

LivingWorks safeTALK

​​

LivingWorks safeTALK is a four-hour training that prepares individuals to recognize when others are experiencing thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. safeTALK teaches participants to:

  • Recognize when people have thoughts of suicide by not “missing, dismissing or avoiding” signs

  • Learn about local resources

  • Apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to connect a person with thoughts of suicide to trained caregivers.

​​​​​Mental Health First Aid 

​​​

​Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based, early-intervention course that teaches participants about mental health and substance use challenges. There are Youth, Teen, Adult and Veteran-specific MHFA trainings. 

​​

Here in Westchester County, Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) is the agency that provides in-person and virtual MHFA training sessions. For information about their training schedule, click here.

QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer

​​

QPR teaches 3 steps to help save a life from suicide. People trained in QPR learn to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. QPR is appropriate for all community members and organizations. QPR training is delivered by certified trainers.

​

The Connect Program

​​

The Connect Program offers trainings to develop a planned community response to a death by suicide. The goals are to promote healing of those who are most directly affected, as well as those indirectly affected by the death, and to reduce risk of additional suicide deaths. Attendees learn about:

  • The problem of suicide including risk factors and warning signs

  • The impact of suicide on individuals and the community

  • Safe messaging to effectively communicate needed information while respecting individuals’ rights to confidentiality and preferences regarding dissemination of information

  • Talking with individuals of different ages as well as backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities
